Tips For Finding and Naming the Perfect Chihuahua Puppy

Finding well bred Chihuahua puppies isn't always an easy task. There are many breeders on the internet trying to sell Chihuahuas, but not all of them are honest sellers. Make sure you do research first before buying from any breeders. Sometimes the best looking puppies aren't the healthiest. Appearances can sometimes be deceiving, therefore ethical breeders who take good care of the litters should be the ones you purchase from.

So what should you look for, exactly? Here are a few tips for selecting a great, healthy Chihuahua puppy:

• Make sure the puppy is at least ten weeks of age. Ethical breeders will never sell one younger than ten weeks old. If they are any younger, then they will have an increased chance of becoming sick.

Do research to find out what a healthy Chihuahua puppy looks like so you'll have an idea of what to look for. Knowing how to spot healthy puppies is something you definitely need to learn how to do. The coat should be clean and soft, the gums should be pink, and the eyes should be clear. If you're buying from an ethical, responsible breeder, though, then the odds for selecting a healthy puppy are in your favor.

• Learn the difference between “show” and “pet” qualities. If you just want a Chihuahua for a pet, then show qualities shouldn't matter so much. This means you don't have to be picky with its physical appearance.

• Chihuahua puppies all have different personality types. The personality types can include: independent, normal, submissive, and dominant. If you don't have a lot of time to train, then a normal puppy is your best choice. A submissive puppy may also be an okay choice, except they tend to be shy and quiet and not as playful as more “normal” puppies.

• There are tests you can do to determine a Chihuahua puppy's personality type. If you try gently holding one down or cradling it in your palm, and it struggles for a few seconds before relaxing, then it's a “normal” puppy. If it fights and struggles the entire time, then it could be a dominant or independent puppy. If it simply hangs limp then it's submissive. No puppy is better than any other; some will simply suit you better as a pet than other.

Once you've made your decision and adopted your Chihuahua puppy, you'll have to think of a good name. When it comes to naming a Chihuahua, just use some common sense. For instance, don't name him or her something that sounds like “no” or any other command. Also, the ideal name for any dog should contain two syllables, with the last one ending with a vowel. Some examples include, “Cocoa”, “Spotty”, and “CeeCee”. Your Chihuahua will recognize his or her own name better if it's clear and easily understood. Follow these examples and put a bit of thought into it and you'll come up with the perfect name for a Chihuahua puppy!
